Who are office desks for?

Not every workspace looks the same. Whether it's a growing team, a home office or a busy reception area, here's where a fixed height desk makes sense.

Growing teams and office fitouts

New office or a growing team? Fixed height desks offer a cost-effective way to furnish a workspace. Choosing matching sizes and finishes helps create a consistent look.

Assigned desks and individual workstations

For people who have their own workstation, a sturdy desk provides room for the ergonomic essentials and provides a practical place to settle in and focus on their work.

Home and hybrid setups

A smaller desk at home can create a comfortable place to work without taking over the room. Whether you're working from home or splitting your week between home and the office, having your own workspace makes the day a little easier.

Reception and administration areas

These are busy places that leave a first impression on visitors. A desk that's a decent size keeps the essentials organised and the space clutter free, helping staff and your brand perception.

    Frequently Asked Questions
    Office Desks

What height is a standard office desk?

Most office desks in New Zealand sit between 72 and 75cm from floor to work surface, and Buro's fixed desks are 720mm. Treat that as a starting point. The height you want is the one where your forearms sit level with the desk and your feet stay flat on the floor.

How do you make a fixed height desk fit the person using it?

The desk does not move, so everything around it does. Set your chair height first, until your forearms are level and your shoulders drop. If your feet no longer reach the floor, add a footrest. Then bring the top edge of your screen up to roughly eye level.

Can fixed desks work in shared or hot desking spaces?

They can, though everyone sitting at them works at the same height. That is fine where people are of similar build, or where the desk is only used for an hour at a time. Once a desk is shared across a rotating team, a height adjustable desk suits better.

What is the difference between an office desk and a workstation?

The two words are often used interchangeably. In practice, a desk is a single work surface, while a workstation describes that desk plus the screens and storage around it. It is worth being clear about which you mean when you are comparing options.
